Over 100 company's databases containing dates of manufacture of musical instruments. I've never seen a Yamaha without a serial number - and there are only three reasons I can think of as to why it wouldn't have one. The first is that it's a fake. This is unlikely - it seems it's quite an old horn,so it probably pre-dates the rather recent practice of certain Chinese manufacturers punting out fakes. I would say sometime in 1979 or before! A Yamaha factory rep told me years ago that was the year they stopped using the 'purple logo.' There is a guy on Sax-On-The-Web who is building a database of Yamaha serial numbers for saxes. Has a ways to go. I don't know if.
